"Sarah & I are both so saddened by John's passing. Our sincere sympathies to Ida and the entire Gillis family. His energy and lust for life were incredibly infectious - possibly only surpassed for his love for chocolate!! We could never bake the chocolate lava cakes quite to his perfection but he never had a problem cleaning the bowl completely! We have so many fond memories we don't know where to begin. I had the honor & privilege of working with and learning from John for over 20 years and I can't recollect a single day in which we did not share a laugh. He will be missed by all who knew him. Thanks for the wonderful memories."
"Dearest Ida, Will and I are holding your family close to our hearts in love and prayer. Jack's zest for life was infectious and the 2 of you together left a little joy in all the places you traveled. Much love and ((hugs)) "

"Dear Ida and family - We were deeply saddened to hear the sudden passing of John. Although we didn’t see you often, you and John have left a profound impression on us. We will never forget how you opened your home to us for Christmas when we were just the two of us away from our family. Many of the thoughts we shared about your family that day and when you came to our house a few years later have stayed with us and we still evoke them as we are now raising our own family. We send you our thoughts and deep sympathy - Marielle, Vincent, Laurie and Emeric."

"When I first met and worked with John back in 2000, I realized I could learn everything and anything about logging tools and operations from him alone. John seemed to have an unstoppable energy and would reach out to help whether it was a problem with your computer or re-shingling your house! We shared many great laughs with John....our condolences to you Ida, and family. John's generosity and zest for life will always be remembered."
"Nathan, Ashley and family- I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this difficult time
"
"So sorry to hear of your family's loss. I felt like I knew Jack from all of the stories I've heard since my mom Priscilla met Jack & Ida when she moved to Upper Musquodoboit. Mom always had great things to say about Jack and Ida and I appreciate all of the times I heard of Jack and Ida helping Mom out. Jack has left a lasting legacy even to those who did not have the pleasure of meeting him. My prayers are with your family. "
"The Great Gillie as we all called him at Schlumberger...I worked with John for several years in the 1980's & 1990's and then when he moved over to PanCanadina / Encana. John was highly motivated to be a perfectionist at what ever he undertook...from a logging Engineer to over seeing logging operations to designing / building his own house. He throughly enjoyed his work and his family time; always displayed great dedication to both. I always enjoyed catching up with John and Ida when they would past thru Calgary on their country / world wide visiting tours.
"
"Ida we can't believe that Jack is gone.We had such a great visit in August and knew how excited he was to have all his family together in one place after such a long time. He was so full of life and excitement about what the two of you were going to do and see now that he had retired. We have similar families and belief in the importance of family and this reunion had captured his heart. We are so sorry and offer you and your family our great thoughts about Jack and our prayers."
"We would like to extend our condolences to Ida and the kids. John will be greatly missed."
